I get a lot of questions regarding the difference between soft maple and hard maple and while there are some differences the biggest is the density of the wood. There is nothing soft about soft maple. It's just as hard as Cherry or Walnut but is only called soft to differentiate it from Hard Maple which is slightly more dense. There are a lot of luthiers who swear that they need hard maple for their projects but expect the figure in hard maple to be like the figure in soft maple and they are just not the same. With very few exceptions, you will always find more beautiful, more vibrant, and more varieties of striking figure in soft maple. The figure in hard maple is more of squiggly, less uniform and less vibrant kind of figure. It's also harder to get a picture of as it reflects the light differently. Also the color of soft maple is more of a khaki tan or pinkish brown and the color of hard maple is more of a yellowish to creamy white color.
