Both faces are covered in heartwood. Surfaced two face and lightly figured. There are two 1/8" puncture marks located 9 1/2" from one end of the pictured face resulting from moisture testing during kiln drying.
Silver maple (Acer saccharinum) is a faster growing species of maple tree that is commonly found near water sources and can grow to large size in a short time period. On average, silver maple is one of the less dense or softer species of maple but is still a great choice for certain applications. It ranks around 700-900 on the Janka hardness scale whereas Red Maple (common soft maple) is around 1,000 and Hard Maple is around 1,400. Silver maple is comparable to Box Elder, Sycamore and Honduran Mahogany. It machines well, readily absorbs stains well and is great for wood turning, bowl making, etc.
