Due to the rugged nature of most of the Central Pennsylvania mountains, early timber-fellers would need to construct log rails through the landscape to assist in making it easier to extract the valuable logs. Horses and mules were initially used to pull logs through the woods but they would get stuck on roots, other trees, built up leaves and make a hard job nearly impossible. The solution was taking less valuable logs, hand splitting them into halves, staking down the halves and then rolling the logs onto the rails and using the horses to pull the logs along the rails. I'm often humbled when thinking about the amount of struggle and toil these men went through just to make a dollar a day.

When completing custom jobs for customers or sorting though packs of figured lumber I often end up with various remnants that don't fit into a category that I can easily sell.
