Raft Houses

In the mid 19th and early 20th century the Susquehanna River was host to many raft houses which housed the workers, their families and horses which worked along the river in the lumber industry. In this picture the first raft was the dining area (notice the cooks holding up some goodies), the second raft was the sleeping area and the third raft was the stable for the horses. Note the long rudders which enabled the rafts to be maneuvered. In 1860 the Williamsport area was proclaimed the lumber capital of the world with a lumber production of approximately 1 million board feet of lumber per day!
