Curly Soft Maple occurs naturally in only 2-5% of all soft maple trees. At the present time only about 20% of the figured soft maple is over 9 inches wide. No two pieces of figured maple from the same tree are identical. They are a lot like human family in this respect. They may have the same genes, look similar and are of the same color but that's where all similarities end.
I often am asked about the workability of figured hardwoods. I've taken some time to try to answer some of the most common asked questions. If this is something you would like to view, it can be found here.
We occasionally get some material that is truly exceptional in quality and figure which we classify as Private Stock grade. Because we are frequently asked for individual boards that have truly exceptional figure, I've decided to make a listing of these soft maple Private Stock boards as I come across them. These boards are priced individually according to their uniqueness and are just the thing for musical instrument projects or any project that requires exceptional figure. All the material listed below is custom sorted to insure that you do not get material that is inferior as to wood quality and figure. The figure is always throughout the entire board and you don't need a magnifying glass to see it. It cost us more to do this but is does pay for itself because there is a minimum of wood waste and the figure is always as advertised. Because the material is custom selected........hardly a knot is to be found. All lumber grades are NHLA 1Com& Btr. Please Note: Most of this material will be found in lengths of 8 foot and longer. Anything over 8 foot will have to be cut to meet FedEx shipping specs. Please indicated how you would want these longer lengths cut with your order.
