An Explanation of Heartwood |

A note here about heartwood. Heartwood is the older, harder central portion of a tree that is usually darker, denser, less permeable, and more durable than the surrounding sapwood.
In the cherry tree the heartwood is the more desirable. The heartwood is red and the sapwood is a light tan color. In the maple tree the sapwood is the more desirable. The sapwood in the hard maple tree is more of a creamy white color and in the soft maple the sapwood is less creamy in hue which can be anywhere from a off white to very light tan color. The heartwood of the maples can be green, brown or pinkish in color which makes it less desirable because of the color variations.
Run of the mill lumber places don't sort this out. They mix it in with their clear grades and you pay for it. It is separated out by us because it makes it more economical for the end user and some applications don't require two clear faces--why pay more for something you don't need?
