Curly Hard Maple |

While curly soft maple only occurs in 2-5% of trees naturally, curly hard maple is even rarer, occurring only about 0.5% of the time. It has creamier color with a slightly yellow hue and is stronger and harder than soft maple. It machines very nicely with sharp tools and contrary to popular belief, is a joy to work. Many craftsmen prefer it to soft maple in their projects because of the excellent results. Click to see other recommendations about machining qualities of figured hardwoods. Very nice figure and great width. You wonder where these old bull maple trees were hiding all these years to escape the woodcutters blade. These are my favorites because of the nature of the curl, wood and width all combined to give a woodworkers eye a treat. Generally comes through sapwood one & two face but there may be some heartwood occasionally on either or both faces. |

As you can well imagine this category is the "rarest of the rare". Because of logging pressure the big bull maple trees are getting very scarce. Since figure only occurs in about 0.5% of the hard maple trees that are cut, the statement "rarest of the rare" is indeed appropriate. Material is generally sapwood on one face with sapwood and heartwood on the second face but may have minimal heartwood on both faces. |
