Pennsylvania Curly Cherry The Best Available Anywhere....Period!

Curly cherry does not have the same type of figure as curly maple and it is very difficult to find outstanding figure. As with any figured wood you have varying degrees of figure...some good, some better and the best. This is especially true in curly cherry. Quality figure appears in less than 2% of all the cherry trees harvested. In order to bring you the finest figured cherry possible, we have decided to custom pick and buy only the top 20% of the figured cherry available to us. This figures out to less than 0.5% of all the cherry harvested or only about 1 board in 200 curly cherry boards!

We follow a set of standards to ensure that our customers get the very best figured material available. First... the board must have above average figure throughout the entire board. Second....since we pull from 1Com & Btr lumber grade the board must be as free of defects as possible. Most of my selection falls in the FAS lumber grade which is the best available. Third.... the board must have at least 80% heartwood on one side but most of our selection is 100% heartwood on one side with a mixture of heartwood and sapwood on the other side. Lastly and perhaps the most important in working with any kind of lumber, it must be reasonably straight. Curly cherry at times presents a problem here because of the very nature of the figure and the presence of sapwood and heartwood combined. When drying the lumber if sapwood is present on one side, it tends to dry quicker and this presents a possible problem to maintain a straight board because of drying stress. The downside of our search for outstanding curly cherry is that the material is more expensive both to me and to you. Another important fact that I know that you are aware of is that the cherry market is very explosive at this time. This is due not only to demand but also the nature of supply. Pennsylvania cherry has long been regarded as the very best available anywhere because of the color of the lumber and the size and grades of the logs. For those of you that do not know, a set of material is a grouping of lumber cut from the same tree. Using a set of lumber to build your project is obviously desirable because the figure and finished effect will be compatible. If you mix different figures from different trees you may have a number of things that detract from the attractiveness of the finished piece. These distractions may take the form of very different types of figure that are not at all complimentary to your overall figure structure. Also since each tree is different as to its density and wood structure you may experience a problem in the way different wood takes stain or finishes. Of the two problems mentioned above, figure compatibility is the most problematic for builders. Some of the sets consists of only a small amount of boards. Although the tree yielded more boards, we pulled only the material from the tree set that was outstanding as to figure and grade.

If you are using figured lumber in your project, you can make a piece only so good structurally and stylelistically. After that is done, the figured wood is the primary component that makes the piece what it is.....pleasing or distracting to the eye. We have assembled a number of figured sets for your consideration. These sets are more expensive than the rest of the 4/4 curly material due to the time and effort that goes into the procurement, special handling and additional cost of the wood itself.
