Curly or Flamed Yellow Birch

Clearfield, PA Log Drive
In this picture taken sometime in the late 19th century, we can see men with pikes sorting logs on the West Branch of the Susquehanna river. The West Branch is narrow at this location which makes it ideal for workers to sort logs by their end brands and get them to the right mill. This was dangerous work especially in the cold and fast moving spring thaw. One slip and if hypothermia didn't get you, you were likely to get crushed between the logs and they might not find you for days. All for about $1 a day!

At MapleLeaf Hardwoods, we proudly present our Curly Yellow Birch, showcasing a selection of unique and rare figured species. As a trusted hardwood supplier, we focus on providing craftsmen with exceptional figured hardwoods such as Flame Yellow Birch. Each of these highly figured Yellow Birch selections features captivating grain and figure patterns that enhance the beauty and artistry of any project.
The figure found in the yellow birch tree is some of the strongest and most vivid of any figured species. It has many names like flamed birch, wavy birch, curly birch and others. The sapwood of this species is a creamy to light yellow in color and the heartwood can be a reddish brown to darker tan color. Typically with Flame Birch the heartwood has just as much beautiful figure as the sapwood which in other species of figured material often isn't the case.
The Value of Curly Yellow Birch
Our Curly Yellow Birch collection features varieties that are not only visually captivating but also rare. This tree species yields minimal amounts of figured material, which makes it highly sought after. Craftsmen can expect to find an array of sizes and thicknesses and each selection showcases distinct grain patterns that make it an ideal choice for everything from furniture-making, musical instruments to intricate wood projects. Not many people know this, however, Yellow Birch is harder and more dense than Hard Maple which makes it a perfect choice for Luthiers and instrument makers with it's highly reflective beauty. Even though it is a dense wood, it accepts tooling very well and is actually a joy to work.
Whether you’re a furniture maker, hobbyist, luthier, or professional craftsman, MapleLeaf Hardwoods is dedicated to supplying you with the highest quality curly hardwoods. Discover the exceptional beauty of our Curly Yellow Birch and elevate your next project to new heights.
