The board is first surface jointed on a spiral headed jointer to straighten one face and then run through a spiral headed planer to make the board parallel to the surface jointed face. This operation insures a surface free tearout result. It may or may not present a partially surfaced result but will be noted in the "Graders Notes". At times the board may be noted to be surfaced 4 sides and this indicates that the board is also edge jointed.
